Every two weeks through winter the beautiful Vineyard Hotel, in Claremont, hosts a food and wine pairing dinner.
On the 3rd of July this year, it will be the turn of Meerlust Wine Estate to show off their latest vintages. On the 10th June I was invited to attend the food and wine-pairing flavor profiling session in the Binnehof room at the hotel. I was joined by Mr. Roy Davies, the Hotel General Manager; Chris Williams, the winemaker at Meerlust Wine Estate; Matt Deitchmann, Hotel Food and Beverage Manager; Eddie Turner, Marketing Manager from Meerlust Wine Estate; Luvuyo Mtwecu, Sous Chef and a few selected staff from the Hotel.
The object of the afternoon was to put together the menu for the Food and Wine pairing evening.
From the food side there was a table laid out with all sorts of culinary delights. Every delicious component was on hand to make up the perfect menu. On the wine side, Chris and Eddie brought a 2013 Chardonnay, 2013 Pinot Noir, 2012 Merlot, 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon and their acclaimed 2010 Rubicon.
The afternoon was spent with much banter and enjoyment whilst the pairing was created. Sadly the event is already fully booked, but don’t despair as there are more planned with other estates throughout the year.
The highlight for me for the afternoon has got to be the tasting of the new vintage of the vineyards own Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon Blend. The grapes for this wine were picked from the hotels own vineyard and it is being made by Chris on the Meerlust Estate.
The wine was found to be quite exciting with a crisp nose with hints of passion fruit and a palate that has fresh acidity. If only this wine was going to be made available, but due to such small quantity it will be kept for special occasions.
Many thanks to Roy Davies for inviting me!
