Ian and Anette Corder bought a beautiful apple farm in 2003 with the purpose of growing and producing world-class Sauvignon Blanc wine. In 2004, the transformation from apples into what is now a spectacular, new world wine farm began. Their farm is perfectly situated on the Elgin Valley plateau, 300 metres above sea level. It is close to the Atlantic Ocean with the ideal cool climate for slow ripening Sauvignon Blanc grapes. In fact, it has all the ideal variations in soil, terrain, microclimate and exposure to produce exceptional fruit for the Corder Cool Climate Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah varietals
Corder vineyards are positioned on Elgin’s cooler South Eastern slopes so they engage all the elements in perfect balance. In the mornings, the Elgin Valley is often filled with a white cooling mist. This typifies the area’s gentle climate and contributes to perfect grapes for our remarkable wines.
Throughout the year, each vine is carefully, seasonally nurtured. In the cold winter months, vines are allowed to rest and store the energy required for the new growing season. Prior to this they are pruned by trained, heedful hands to guarantee a healthy bud burst later in the spring. From spring they are tended on a daily basis to encourage nature’s nutrition, sunshine and cooling breezes.
Leading up to the long awaited harvest, vine canopies are meticulously sculptured to create the perfect ripening environment. And, because it is cooler here, our grapes enjoy a longer time on the vine, which culminates in optimum ripeness and varietal flavour development. Only the healthy, optimally ripe grapes make it into our wines.
Corder Cool Climate Sauvignon Blanc
This is an excellent example of Elgin elegance and crisp acidity, well balanced with fruit, lemon and apples on the nose, tropical fruit and a lingering length.
The 2011 vintage was highly recommended for 5 stars in the 2013 Platter Guide and the 2012 achieved 4.5 stars in the 2014 edition. The 2013 vintage received 4.5 stars in the 2015 Platter Guide.
Corder Cool Climate Chardonnay
Fresh and lightly wooded with a zesty lemon and grapefruit taste. The good balance and acidity makes this wine a refreshing summer drink and an easy companion to spicy dishes. It attained 4 stars in Platter 2015.
Corder Cool Climate Syrah
A great cool climate Syrah with very elegant livery. Deep opaque plum ruby at the core to garnet around the edges. On the nose, classic Shiraz ripe bloodplums, mulberries and a grind of white pepper. In the mouth, full sappy berries and plums, crisp red pomegranate and cranberry acidity. Ripe and gently grippy tannins make this an ideal food wine.
Corder Cool Climate Pinot Noir
Generous cherries and red berries, more raspberry and pomegranate fruit on the nose. Whiffs of forest floor after rain. Subtle oak and oak spice. Brilliant fruity palate, sweet fruit though the wine is dry. Delicious mouthful of wine with a broad mid palate and then a dry fruit and long aftertaste.
