Perfect weather (nice soft light), stunning views, professional service and of course delicious wines, all this added up to a very special visit to the Cape Point Vineyards earlier today. The estate is situated in Noordhoek on the back slopes of Table Mountain. The tasting room is open daily from 11h00 till 18h00, (they close on Thursdays at 14h00 for their Community Market, which starts at 16h30)
On our way driving up to the tasting room we passed smiling and waving staff who were busy picking the 2018 harvest.
For our wine tasting experience we had the pleasure of being served by Emrhys Stead, a very competent young man who has a sound knowledge of the wines he serves. The estate can be very proud of him. We were ushered to a table on the deck that overlooked the dam and the vineyards flowing down to a backdrop of the white sands and blue seas of Longbeach.
We were offered a cheese platter for two with a selection of chevin, fontina and brie served with roasted vine tomatoes, caper berries, marinated olives, roasted walnuts and creme fraiche and basil pesto bruschetta at a cost of R98.00. This was substantial, fresh and very tasty. The estate is renowned for its white wines.
The wines we tasted were:
Splattered Toad, Sauvignon Blanc 2017:
Green peppers, medium to high acidity, opened up nicely in the glass and a fruity fresh finish.
Cape Point Vineyards, Cape Town Sauvignon Blanc 2017:
Tropical fruits, quite stylish, crisp, good acidity and a fresh finish.
Cape Point Vineyards, Noordhoek Sauvignon Blanc 2017:
Gooseberries, grapefruit, rich body, good texture, crisp acidity, fresh finish.
Cape Point Vineyards, Sauvignon Blanc Reserve 2016:
Shyish nose to start, which open up well as time went on, hints of citrus notes, good acidity and shortish finish.
Cape Point Vineyards, Isliedh 2016:
Citrus and peaches, hints of dried fruits, gentle oaky notes, going to age very well.
Cape Point Vineyards, Chardonnay 2016:
My choice of the tasting, citrus, limes, apricots and honey, this combined with a crisp acidity is a match made in heaven. Well balanced with a fresh finish.
Splattered Toad Shiraz 2017:
Fruit brought in from the Swartland. Concentrated, jammy fruits. Easy drinking, soft tannins, medium to long finish.
The standard and quality of the wines from this estate is extremely high and it is clear that a lot of care and love is put into the wine making process.
If you find yourself with an hour or so to spare my suggestions is that you pop in for a relaxing breather and enjoy some very special views and great wines.
