Heather and I photographed an event at the 12 Apostles Hotel yesterday. Just before we were about to leave we popped to say hi to the head sommelier, Gregory Mutambe. In passing earlier this year, Gregory had mentioned that if we were in the area we should pop in so that he could show us his impressive cellar. Impressive is an understatement. The cellar has won numerous, Wine List of the Year Awards and also has a Diamond Certification by Diners Club Wine List. Whilst perusing through the wine racks, which are full of both local and foreign wines, two wines stood out for me.
Firstly a local wine called the G 2012 L’Aube de la Vigne. It was created by a partnership between the noted Bordeaux wine consultant Denis Dubourdieu and ex Meerlust winemaker, Giorgio Dalla Cia.
The wine is deep ruby with purple accents in color. The perfume offers creamy cassis, earth, new wood, licorice, boysenberry, crushed stone, lead pencil and Smokey aromatics. In the mouth, the wine is soft and round in texture with a refined, elegant, personality. The tannins impart a bit of dust on the palate. The wine ends with vanilla, black raspberry, licorice, coffee and jam. Alcohol is 15%. Blend: 59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Shiraz, 12% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc. The fruit was harvested from 12 different, micro parcels planted along the Western Cape. The wine is aged for 18 months in 100% new French oak. The wine sets a benchmark for quality, price and rarity in South Africa. Only 3,745 numbered bottles were produced. A small, production of the wine was produced in 2009, but was not made commercially available. The bottles were given to friends and family. The packaging is impressive. The oversized, heavy bottles are hand numbered and individually packaged in wood boxes. R6800.00 at the restaurant. http://www.wine-searcher.com
The other wine that caught my eye is the 2011 Domaine de la Romanee-Conti. With a price tag of R250000.00, it is certainly an impressive wine.
The nose is charming with wild flowers, cherries and a delicate, layered background. The palate is profound and there is a richness, depth and generosity. The shape and weight of the Romanee-Conti is extraordinary – powerful without weight, profound without heaviness and a long, persistent finish. http://www.wine-searcher.com
Thank you to Gregory for showing us around.
