Mellasat Vineyards

The Richardson family started Mellasat Vineyards in 1996 from the original farm Dekkersvlei that was established in 1693. Located near Paarl, in the heart of South Africa’s famous Winelands just 45 mins from Cape Town. The vineyard enjoys a spectacular position under the dramatic Klein Drakenstein Mountains together with panoramic views of the Paarl and its famous granite domes. At Mellasat Vineyards they believe that they are a bit different, which is why you’ll find a white Pinotage amongst their range of award winning wines. And not content to leave it at that they have also created a Cemetery of Forgotten Wines in their underground cellar.

The Wines

Our small but quality ranges of wines are an expression of harmony of the local natural beauty and are aimed primarily at the discerning domestic and export markets. Whether it’s the premium Mellasat or the easy styled Dekker’s Valley our two boutique ranges provide something for everyone from wine connoisseurs to the casual, everyday wine drinker. Mellasat currently have two ranges. The main Mellasat label is represented through the flagship blend Mellasat “M” and is joined by the premium White Pinotage, made in a very unique style and the classical barrel fermented Chardonnay. The Tempranillo and the Viognier form part of “Premium Exclusive” collection under this range due to the small volumes of these wines made.

The Vineyards

From 1997 Stephen Richardson started replacing some of the farm’s existing Chenin Blanc vines with the noble cultivars Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, and Chardonnay, as well as South Africa’s own Pinotage grape variety. Under the expert supervision of local viticulturist, Poena Malherbe, particular attention was taken to selecting the rootstock that would suit the warmer climate and granitic soils of the Paarl region. The farm also grows Tempranillo and Viognier that more recently came into production. The management of the vineyards, currently eight hectares, is geared to reflecting this unique “terroir”. Both our vineyard and winery are registered under the Integrated Production of Wine (IPW) and Wine of Origin schemes, which assure both good practice and traceability.
